Basketball Alberta Provincial Tournament Participation
Basketball Alberta holds a provincial tournament each spring, either in Calgary or Edmonton, for teams in an A or B1 Division; occasionally a B2 team may attend but they’d have to be a strong B2 team.
Divisional Qualification
Because Cochrane Minor Basketball Association (CoMBA) teams participate in the Calgary Minor Basketball Association league, if any of our teams in A or B1 divisions receive gold, they automatically qualify to participate in the Basketball Alberta Provincial Tournament with Calgary Minor Basketball Association paying the registration fee; but note that all other expenses associated with attending the tournament such as travel, food and lodging are the responsibility of the team.
Zonal Qualification
CoMBA teams are in Zone 2 which includes Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, etc. Because the communities surrounding Calgary are from a different zone, qualifying A, B1, B2 teams can also elect to enter the Provincial Tournament via our “Zone”. If there happens to be another Zone 2 team in the same Division that also wants to attend Provincials, then the competing Zone 2 teams must play a game to determine the “winner”; with the winner progressing to the Provincial Tournament. If there is not another Zone 2 team in that team’s division that also wants to attend Provincials, then the one team qualifies for the Provincial Tournament out right and it is that team’s discretion whether they wish to attend the tournament.
Because the deadline for registering a team through zonal qualifications for the Provincial Tournament is usually the last Friday in February, CoMBA therefore recommends to our A, B1, B2 teams considering participating at the Provincial Tournament to notify the CoMBA Administrator by the end of January should they wish to register for the tournament.
If a team qualifies via zonal qualifications and depending on CoMBA budgetary allocations for that year, CoMBA may cover all or part of the registration fees to attend the Basketball Alberta Provincial Tournament (refer to the CoMBA Tournament Policy), but note that all other expenses associated with attending the tournament such as travel, food and lodging are the responsibility of the team.
Administrative Support & Procedures
CoMBA supports qualifying teams participating in the Provincial Tournament and will administer the registration process with Basketball Alberta, administer practice gym times, cover the cost of the gym space and provide uniforms for the tournament.
CoMBA’s mandate is to ensure inclusion of all players on the season-roster of a qualifying team to ensure equal access by our players to Basketball Alberta’s Provincial Tournament and any regular season tournaments as well.
CoMBA does require that:
