Kodiaks Coaching Policy

CoMBA Kodiaks has a strong, supportive, basketball community and a wealth of knowledge in its membership.  We benefit from this knowledge through the volunteer efforts of our coaches, many of whom are parents. However, it is not requisite that you have a child in the program to coach with us. If you are a community member who is interested in coaching with our association please email cochraneminorbasketballassoc@gmail.com with your contact information, and a brief outline of your background, qualifications, and areas of interest (ie girls U15, boys U11).

If you are interested in coaching, please register yourself as a staff member in the RAMP registration system. Due to possible scheduling conflicts, we ask that if you have more than one child playing, you indicate your age group preference for coaching. We strongly discourage coaching more than one team. If you have coaching experience and strong basketball knowledge and would like to mentor and assist on your other child's team, that would be appreciated.

CoMBA Kodiaks believe in parent and community coaches having the opportunity to connect with the athletes in a mentorship and life focused system.  Part of this system is to enable the team and players to develop under the Canada Basketball guidelines.  To be a head coach this means minimum training standards are needed.  CoMBA Kodiaks understands as a volunteer based organization this can be difficult but it is a very important standard to allow for the growth of the Athletes.

The minimum requirements for Coaches are:

  • Registration with CMBA as a coach which includes VSC check and ABA membership.  This process includes a mandatory online coaching seminar (30min).  Once registered and completed the minimum requirements you will be provided a Coaches Card which is needed to be on the bench.
  • Signed Coach Code of Conduct Waiver
  • SafeSport

The minimum requirements for a Head coach are:

  • The above minimum requirements listed for coaches
  • the age/level appropriate CMBA training or an equivalent NCCP level of training. This must be completed and documented and submitted to CMBA by the zone/association prior to November.

Coverage of Coaches' Clinics and Certification

Cochrane Minor Basketball Association (CoMBA) encourages its coaches to continually strive to improve their coaching capabilities. In support of this statement, CMBA offers free coaching clinics to its members. If you go to our registration page, log in to RAMP, then choose ' Camps and Clinics' to choose a clinic that works for you.

In addition to CMBA coach training CoMBA Kodiaks will provide support for AB and NCCP training.

These certifications can be attained by attending approved and sanctioned clinics throughout the year. Please refer to the following links for details http://www.abbasketball.ca/content/coach-development-amp-informationhttp://cmba.ab.ca/content/coach-certification-cmba-nccp. Clinic spots fill up fast, therefore, you should register as soon as courses are offered.

CoMBA will reimburse coaches, active in the association, for NCCP coaching clinics specific to Basketball, to a maximum of $150.

To coach at Basketball Alberta Youth Provincials, Basketball Alberta requires the head coach to have a minimum of NCCP's FUNdamentals. This is reviewed annually by ABA.

Coaches are not confirmed until after teams are set in order to present the most objective evaluation possible.

In the event that more than one person has indicated an interest in coaching a particular team, all interested parties will be approached to establish

  • if two interested parties have both indicated they wish to head coach we would see if we can compromise a division of duties amd one taking the assistant role
  • any of the parties would be willing to coach his/her other child's team
  • if, knowing that the team is adequately covered, wish to withdraw their application.

Should more than one party wish to head coach, and all parties wish to 'compete' for the position, the board will meet to assess the applicants' qualifications, coaching certification, experience, and history with the board/association.  The board will then select a 'head' coach based on these factors.

Although coaching experience is definitely an asset to any basketball coach, it is not required. Working together, with ABA and CMBA clinics, and mentoring from fellow coaches, we endeavor to put a capable coach on each bench.  If you want to coach, sign up now!
